Grey: The New Neutral

One of the most prominent design trends across all sectors is the dark grey colour palettes. Within the home, designers are increasingly opting for grey shades over the more traditional magnolia. Some attribute this transition to changes in lighting technology, with customers opting for colder white light over warmer yellow lighting options, supported by Halogen, low energy and LED bulbs.

Others experts recognise the impact that changes in living space and living behaviour has had on colour palette preference. Innovation in fittings, storage systems and appliances has eliminated the need for regular repairs, consequently reducing demand for renovation. Customers now demand a colour palette that will stand the test of time. Bold yet versatile, it is easy to see why grey has become the go-to option, providing a solid base that can be adapted to changes in trends and design choices.

Although rapidly rising in popularity, grey is not a new trend within the furniture industry, as it has heavily dominated at exhibitions over the last few years. In May, we reported on the top trends at Interzum 2017, where dark finishes were prominent throughout.
