How To Put Up LED Strip Lighting

As a tradesperson, there are many reasons to suggest LED lighting to your clients. They allow for design flexibility, have a long lifespan and are energy efficient - using 85% less energy than conventional lighting.

While the product sells itself, proper installation is key. In this article, we will show you how to install LED strips in different areas of the home while sharing our top tips.

Things to Understand Before Installation

When working with LED strips, you can typically expect these simple components:

  •   LED strips
  •   Power blocks or Drivers
  •   Distribution block (with and without switch)
  •   Wiring

Depending on your design, you may require additional materials such as corner clip connectors.Taking time to get this in place before installation can make a big difference. If you are unsure about what you may need, you can use our bespoke lighting design service.

Top Tips:

  • There are pure white, multi white and colour-changing RGB options available.
  • Before you begin assembling the components, it is key to calculate the length of LED strips needed for your project. You will also need to note the wattage supplied by the power block.
  • Power blocks supply a certain number of Watts and the LED strips will have a necessary Wattage needed to illuminate. Keep this in mind.

Deciding Where The Lights Will Be Placed

LED strips make excellent lighting solutions around the home. You can add them as spot lighting in your kitchen or light up an entire room with our Loox LED lighting system.

Here are some of our favourite places to add LED strip lighting:

  • Inside of cabinets
  • Under cabinets
  • Along the floor or ceiling
  • Around the bedframe
  • Inside closets
  • As uplighting by the front door

Top Tip: Install LED strips before hanging any cabinets when using them to light the inside of a cabinet. If you are installing under cabinet lighting, this can happen after the cabinet has been hung. The possibilities are endless. Once you or the designer has decided where the lighting will be placed, purchase accordingly.

The Initial Steps:

Now that you have purchased your items, review the lighting design and carefully note where the power is located. Having a full understanding of where each component belongs via the design will make for a seamless installation. Once you have received your Häfele items, open the box and inspect all of the components.

Cross-check against the design and ensure that you have everything you will need to get started. The final step is to locate the power sources that will be used to power the LEDs. These are vital.

Installing LED Lighting Strips Into Cabinets

If you are installing your lights into a cabinet or cupboard, make sure you drill wire holes before hanging cabinets or attaching the panels. Once the holes have been made, you can easily route the wires to the drivers. Use wire covers and zip ties to keep everything secure.

This is also key to maintaining a clean appearance. Label light, switch and driver to easily access them again in the future if necessary.

1. Find a discrete location to plug the power supply into the wall or battery. You may also choose to use a cable cover.

2. Measure your perimeter. Be sure to include all corners.

3. Place your LEDs onto the ceiling using a casing.
