How Door Handles Work

Door handles come in many shapes and sizes, with some having their own functionality. Today, we will be going over some of the more commonly used handles along with how they work. You can share all of this information with your customers and ensure they choose the right handles for their projects.

How Do Exterior Lever Handles Work

Once the screws are removed, along with the rosette or cover (the material that covers the inside part of a door handle), you can see the inner working of the handle.

On the back of the handle, you will see a spring. This has been wrapped up tightly to ensure that the handle returns to its horizontal position after use. For the handle on the other side, you will find the spindle and the fasteners connecting everything together.

Finally, you have the latch and the latch assembly. These mechanisms work with the spindle and the spring. The spring pushes the latch closed and can feel when the handle is being rotated to open – allowing it to release.

When a lock is added to the door handle, the handle will remain in place, which stops the mechanisms from moving in their natural chain reaction. However, with a key, you can slip the pieces in place once again.

Sliding Door Handle Functionality

If you have a lever on your sliding door, you can expect it to function in the same way we outlined above. However, many sliding doors do not come with levers.

In some cases, we have a simple handle, with no locks or latches. These rely solely on the user's grip and power to pull and close along the runners on the floor.

In other cases, the handle relies on a lock. Once you use your key to release the latch, the process will be the same. Simply hold and push into place along the runners.

How Do Fire Rated Handles Work?

Fire Rated handles work exactly like regular handles. However, let’s discuss what sets them apart and what makes them more valuable during a fire.

First and foremost, Fire Rated handles are created to ensure they function as needed during a fire. While no one wants to experience this, it is extremely important to have the right equipment during these times. That is why they go through strenuous testing and certification processes.

How Doorknobs Function

The two knobs are connected together with a spindle and mounting bolts, much like the lever. The spindle then runs through a latch bolt. The latch bolt then controls the latch itself. When the knob is spun, it pulls the spindle, which moves the latch bolt – resulting in an open or closed door.

Locks can be added to the doorknob as well. Some will have a keyless option, a simple button that temporarily locks. Others do require a key and would most likely be found on the front of entry doors.
