Using spotlights in your kitchen design

Long lasting LED spotlights are also a great way to highlight decorative features, with the added bonus of energy efficiency and minimal maintenance.

Make a statement with striking pendant kitchen lights and create zones within the kitchen space. Use pendant lighting above tables for an intimate dining experience or install pendant lights above kitchen islands for an additional source visual interest.

Set off kitchen designs with strip lighting

LED strip lighting adds a new dimension to kitchen design. Use as profile lighting for a sleek, stylish statement finish or, thanks to its dimmable features, add under wall cabinets as task or ambient lighting. Completely adaptable and flexible, there are endless kitchen lighting options with strip lighting, including up lighting on top of cabinets.

For example, did you know that 52% of homeowners would like lighting built into their kitchen cabinets? This is something that can not only elevate the look but provide much needed assistance to the functionality of the space. Kitchen Lighting FAQs

Q

How many Lumens do I need for a kitchen?

A Assuming a medium sized kitchen of 15 ft x 10 ft, the calculation would be as follows: (15 x 10) x 75 = 11,250 Lumens are required to light an average kitchen Using the table below, we can see that this level of illumination can be achieved through the use of roughly ten LED bulbs with individual Lumens ratings of 1,100.

Q

How long may the lead between the driver and the device be?

A A The maximum lead length from the Loox5 driver to the device is 10 m. Long cable lengths in combination with large loads (strip light lengths) can result in voltage losses in the cable. These lead to visible loss of brightness in the lights. The illuminance listed with the lights has been determined with the rated output voltage of the driver. (12 V or 24 V).

Q

What type of lighting do I need to think about in my kitchen?

A
  • Ambient Lighting can be thought of as the general lighting in a room, provides an overall level of illumination. Ambient lighting should provide a comfortable level of brightness without being too dull or too harsh. All the ceiling lights, pendant lights and recessed down-lights can be used effectively as ambient kitchen lighting.
  • Task Lighting is one of the most important levels of lighting in a kitchen. As one of the busiest rooms, the kitchen is used for all sorts of activities, from mixing and chopping to brewing and juicing. Task lighting provides a focused source of bright light to illuminate the well-used areas such as the counter and the cooker. Spotlights are the easiest way to add task lighting to a kitchen. Ceiling spotlights and wall spotlights can be adjusted and directed to give you all the light you need. Under cabinet lighting can also add task lighting to worktop and counter spaces.
  •  Accent Lighting can be used to create relaxed mood lighting. As the centre of the home, the kitchen can really benefit from a source of soft accent lighting. It’s perfect for chilled out evening lighting and a great way to create a party atmosphere for those who like to entertain. Accent lighting can also be used to create visual effects and highlight decorative items in the kitchen. Glass front cabinets, shelves and undersides of worktops can be given a makeover with LED strip lights. This creates an unusual feature and provides an interesting talking point.

Q

How do I get the right colour output for my kitchen?

A With the use of kitchens being so multifunctional, lighting design hasn’t been as important as it is today, the right colour and placement of lights in the kitchen is paramount to achieving a truly special look and feel. Using the Häfele Multi white lights enables you to not only zone off areas with the 3 above sections but in conjunction with the MESH system enables you to transform the space, look and feel at a touch of a button.

Q

Is cool white or warm white better for a kitchen?

A Cool white lighting is great for task areas such as food preparation spaces, but if the room is a kitchen-diner for example, you’ll want to include warmer white lighting too as it’s much softer. Light layering – where you use a range of lighting types, styles and temperatures – is a great way to achieve the best of all worlds.
